{"id":1598,"date":"2020-11-16T17:34:01","date_gmt":"2020-11-16T17:34:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/kidsengineer.com\/?p=1598"},"modified":"2020-11-16T17:40:52","modified_gmt":"2020-11-16T17:40:52","slug":"design-your-own-covid-app-student-interviews-and-example-presentation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/kidsengineer.com\/?p=1598","title":{"rendered":"Design Your Own COVID App Student Interviews and Example Presentation"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/pvrs.pvrsdk12.org\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/pvrs.pvrsdk12.org\">Pioneer Valley Regional School<\/a> has started a new Computer Science (CS) curriculum called Computer Science Discoveries from code.org.\u00a0\u00a0In the first unit, students learned the basics of computers and computer programing studying the key concepts of problem scoping, input, output, processing, and storage.\u00a0\u00a0All seventh graders &#8211; who have a yearlong computer science and engineering course &#8211; and a subset of eight graders &#8211; who have a shorter rotation of computer science &#8211; designed a potential app that could help some way with the COVID pandemic.\u00a0\u00a0I was impressed by how each student designed an app that strongly reflected their own concerns and interests.\u00a0\u00a0CS students will move on to learn web site design and app programming. \u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-vimeo wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-vimeo wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Rachel\" src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/479930917?dnt=1&amp;app_id=122963\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"autoplay; fullscreen; picture-in-picture; clipboard-write\"><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Interviews \u2013 Middle School \u2013 Design Your Own COVID App Project&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Girl 1 \u2013 RW&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>How did you think of the idea for this app?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Well, it was kind of first came to me because some people just don\u2019t understand what\u2019s going on so the app can help others to understand things better.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>What was it like to do this project?&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s really fun.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;You get to be creative and think of things differently.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>When you say think of things differently, what do you mean by that?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Like look at different perspectives, like looking into the perspective of people not completely understanding how they should be handling Corona Virus.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Girl 2 \u2013 BM&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>How did you think of the idea for this app?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I came up with the idea because it\u2019s something a lot of people are having a problem with.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;They don\u2019t have enough stuff to sanitize things because stores limit people to one or two items every single time they come into the store.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>What was it like to do this designing your own app?&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I think it was really fun.&nbsp;&nbsp;It wasn\u2019t the easiest thing to do but it was fun to think and be open to a bunch of things and possibilities because there weren\u2019t any limitations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Why did you say it wasn\u2019t the easiest thing?&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It wasn\u2019t the easiest thing because there are just so many factors to think about.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Girl 3 \u2013 LK&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>How did you think of the idea for this app?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I just thought it was kind of cool.&nbsp;&nbsp;Something different other than what the other people.&nbsp;&nbsp;I made masks with my mom so it\u2019s already something I kind of do.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>What\u2019s your interest in Computer Science?&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I like it.&nbsp;&nbsp;I like the whole thing.&nbsp;&nbsp;You don\u2019t have to do one certain thing.&nbsp;&nbsp;You can make your own thing in Computer Science.&nbsp;&nbsp;You don\u2019t have to stick to one thing and I like the coding,&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Boy 1 \u2013 JG \u2013 Social Distance Activity Generator &#8211; SDAG<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>How did you think of the idea for this app?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Well, I know that personally I\u2019ve been feeling stressed and\/or bored. This is just a great way for people who feel like me who need keep it moving, get the blood moving, just to take your mind off things.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>What do you think of projects like this \u2013 computer science and engineering &#8211; that you\u2019ve done?&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019ve really enjoyed them.&nbsp;&nbsp;I think it very important because the future is going to have all types of this stuff. In general, I just like this class. All these projects have been really fun.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Boy 2 \u2013 JL- The Germ Finder&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>How did you think of the idea for this app?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I was just sitting down and I thought and I thought. And I was thinking about how you could stay clean.&nbsp;&nbsp;II was thinking about these teachers were saying they take these UV lights across the room to clean the classrooms.&nbsp;&nbsp;And what if I made an app with a UV light in it?&nbsp;&nbsp;So, I just started thinking so I thought of this.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>What was it like to do this project?&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I liked it.&nbsp;&nbsp;It was pretty interesting.&nbsp;&nbsp;You had to think.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Boy 3 \u2013 BG \u2013 Go Xpert \u2013 Fitness App&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>How did you think of the idea?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I was basically just thinking was would be good in this pandemic.&nbsp;&nbsp;What would be a relevant topic for it?&nbsp;&nbsp;The first thing that hit my mind was fitness. My second idea was gaming or something but that wouldn\u2019t help anybody with health in any kind of way.
