{"id":1443,"date":"2011-02-19T03:56:53","date_gmt":"2011-02-19T10:56:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/jheffernan.com\/wordpress\/?p=314"},"modified":"2011-02-19T03:56:53","modified_gmt":"2011-02-19T10:56:53","slug":"school-it-in-the-dark-ages-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/kidsengineer.com\/?p=1443","title":{"rendered":"School IT in the Dark Ages?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I went to a meeting of local school IT managers last week and some of them appear to be in the dark ages.\u00a0 They talked about blocking Google Docs because a teacher <em>could possibly <\/em>post kid&#8217;s contact info there.\u00a0\u00a0 &#8220;We provide everything they need here so they don&#8217;t need their own laptops or smart phones.&#8221;\u00a0 Everything meant Office and typing programs.\u00a0 They wanted to store all data locally with nothing in the cloud.\u00a0 Seemed to be all about control and sticking with the Microsoft only vision of the world.\u00a0 There are issues with having data in the cloud but it is already very common.\u00a0 For example, our SPED data is in the cloud.\u00a0 They seemed to forget that the power of Google Docs is in the collaboration features (and the cost) and that it is not the same as using Office locally.\u00a0 They seemed to not know kids are bringing powerful computers into school with them everyday and don&#8217;t even need our networks.\u00a0 We can&#8217;t teach kids how to be responsible 21st century citizens by trying (and it never works) to prevent every possible way they can get into trouble.\u00a0 There was even a suggestion that we introduce jammers to block their cell phones!\u00a0 We need to model, teach, guide them into the positive, educational, and collaborative uses of technology, both the technology we have and the technology they have all around them.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I went to a meeting of local school IT managers last week and some of them appear to be in the dark ages.\u00a0 They talked about blocking Google Docs because a teacher could possibly post kid&#8217;s contact info there.\u00a0\u00a0 &#8220;We &hellip; <a href=\"https:\/\/kidsengineer.com\/?p=1443\">Continue reading <span class=\"meta-nav\">&rarr;<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"sfsi_plus_gutenberg_text_before_share":"","sfsi_plus_gutenberg_show_text_before_share":"","sfsi_plus_gutenberg_icon_type":"","sfsi_plus_gutenberg_icon_alignemt":"","sfsi_plus_gutenburg_max_per_row":"","footnotes":""},"categories":[19,25],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-1443","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-kids-2","category-tech"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.2 - https:\/\/yoast.com\/product\/yoast-seo-wordpress\/ -->\n<title>School IT in the Dark Ages?
